Medical schools in Nigeria are tough and rough, however, it is a programme aspiring medical doctors have to go through. Ignoring the woes, Nigeria has some of the best medical schools in the region. Universities that offer medicine in Nigeria are not many in number, however, the standards are high. Private medical schools exist, and many people doubt their standards and quality, however, in their short time of operations, have recorded great strides in the medical field.

Here are 10 of the best medical schools in Nigeria.

  1. University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan is the undisputed champion with regards to the study of medicine. Its medical school has ranked number one for years and will continue to for years to come. The University of Ibadan has the most famous medical school in the country. Medicine has been the flagship discipline of the University of Ibadan since its inception. since 1967 to date 6,909 more graduands have qualified and received the degree of M.B; B.S (Ibadan); in the same vein the school had trained 1,180 Nursing graduates since 1968, 694 Physiotherapy graduate since 1969, 621 BDS graduates since 1980, 583 Human Nutrition graduates since 1982, 870 Biochemistry graduates and 298 Physiology graduates since 1986. University of Ibadan College of Medicine remains the hardest programme to gain entrance to.

  1. Obafemi Awolowo University

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is one of the three faculties constituting the present College of Health Sciences. It was created in 1993 when the then Faculty of Health Sciences went collegiate to become the College of Health Sciences. The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences provides the basic training and foundation for the MBChB and BChD degree programmes. Obafemi Awolowo University formerly University of Ife has contributed greatly to the country’s health sector by Since inception in 1972, the College of Health Sciences (then Faculty of Health Sciences) has made major contributions to the supply of highly trained medical graduates especially to the Nigerian health sector.

The College of Medicine was conceived by the founding fathers as a Medical School which is an autonomous entity within the University of Lagos. It was founded to produce highly trained medical manpower to provide specialized medical services and to conduct research into health-related problems. In October 1962, the first batch of 28 medical students was admitted into the College and they received their first lectures on October 3, 1962. Through years of dedication and quality learning, College of Medicine Unilag remains the first choice for many prospective undergraduates and those enrolling for medical school. The College consists of 32 departments with a student population of almost 2000 students and a staff strength of 1,850. The College has to date produced over 6,000 graduates in disciplines of Medicine, Dentistry, Microbiology, Physiotherapy, Physiology, Radiography and Pharmacology.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka is by far one of the best schools in the country with a top medical school. With an unbelievable list of alumni. The medical school, in Enugu, has most of it activities in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), where doctors and other health workers are trained with high standards and have proven over the years that they can effect a significant positive change in Africa and the entire worlds’ healthcare system. In 50 years, the university has recorded great strides.

  1. Lagos State University

The College of Medicine of the Lagos State University popularly known as LASUCOM is one of the top College of Medicine in Nigeria. The college is located within the structure of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. It was established in 1999 under the administration of Col.Mohammed Buba Marwa who donated the building known as Ayike House to the School. The college started with training medical student that led to the award of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB;BS) Degree and expanded to other programmes such as Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Nursing Science (BN.Sc), Bachelor of Science, Physiology (B.Sc. Physiology)and postgraduate programmes in Physiology, Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Public Health. It currently has two faculties, Basic medical sciences and Clinical Sciences and LASUCOM is also by far the fastest growing College of Medicine in Nigeria.

The University of Benin popularly called UNIBEN is a leading university in Nigeria, with a top college of medicine. The School of Medicine was established in 1973, then Faculty of Medicine to run a 6-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) full-time degree program.
